Captions or translations are delayed

How much delay is normal, why translations come a sentence at a time, and what to check when captions fall behind.

Some delay is normal. Captions in the speaker's language come fastest. Translations and the spoken voice come after.

What's normal

Speaker's language. Words appear as they're spoken and firm up as LiveSunday hears more. These run ahead of everything else.

Translations. LiveSunday translates one or two sentences at a time, because word order changes between languages. Three dots on the listener page mean a translation is on its way.

How long a translation waits depends on how the speaker talks:

  • A sentence of 8 words or more goes out on its own as soon as it ends.
  • A short sentence waits for the next one, or for 1.5 seconds of quiet.
  • If the speaker pauses mid-sentence, LiveSunday waits up to 4 seconds before it translates what it has.
  • A long sentence with no end gets split after about 20 to 35 words.

So a speaker who talks in long, winding sentences gets slower translations than one who uses short ones.

Spoken translation. The voice starts after the translated text appears. If it falls more than a minute behind, LiveSunday skips the audio for some lines to catch up. The text still shows.

When the delay is longer than that

Find out where the delay starts.

  1. Watch the Live transcription panel on the console while the speaker talks.
  2. If the console is late too, check the status next to the timer. It should say Connected. Move the computer to a wired connection if you can.
  3. If the console is on time but one phone is late, the problem is that phone's connection. Ask the listener to move to better signal or reload the page.
  4. If only translations are late, compare with the rules above. That's usually the speaker's sentence length.

After a network drop, the console doesn't replay the audio it missed. Captions skip the missed words and carry on from live, so delay doesn't pile up after a drop.

If captions keep falling further behind with a good connection, contact us with the time of the service.
